San Diego Wave FC dominated in their return to NWSL action with 71% possession, 19 shots and 14 corner kicks, but a momentary disorganized moment from the Wave defense led to a 1-0 loss against the Houston Dash.
“There are a couple of times where we lost our organization and it’s just a few times in the game, but it becomes quite dangerous every single time we do that against Houston,” Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall said. “The reality is in a league of small margins you have to be very careful with those.”
San Diego entered 2026 with a different roster construction which saw them lose many key starters from last year, but the new starters were solid in their debuts with the Wave. Brazilian forward Gabi Portilho kept Houston on the back foot on the right wing and Mimi Van Zanten was confident in possession on the right side of the pitch.
Houston made the most of a critical error by the Wave defense just before the end of the first half.
The Wave were pressing high and their backline was momentarily disorganized while Houston had the ball in the midfield. Wave co-captain Kennedy Wesley was waving her hands trying to get her fellow defenders back in position, but it was too late.
Maggie Graham sent a long pass to former Wave forward, Makenzy Robbe perfectly behind the backline allowing Robbe to rush into the final third with a clear look in front of the goal. Wesley attempted to get in Robbe’s way, but Robbe sent the ball strongly toward the far post away from the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
“We just need all as a collective to be more organized,” Wesley said. “We knew that they wanted to play direct and play behind and that’s where they executed.”
Houston sat back defended in a compact low block the rest of the match while the Wave continued to dominate in possession and offensive chances in the second half with 13 shots, five of which on target. However, Houston’s goalkeeper, Jane Campbell, faced the challenge with elite shot stopping ability ultimately earning nine saves across the 90 minutes.
The Wave play their next match on the road against the Utah Royals on Sunday, March 22 and return home for a midweek match against the Portland Thorns on Wednesday, March 25.
