San Diego Wave FC are off to the hottest start in club history.

With a 1-0 victory against the newest NWSL expansion club, Boston Legacy, San Diego Wave FC has set a club record for consecutive victories with four and hold the top spot in the NWSL standings.

“It was a very gritty game…” Wesley said. “We had to fight to play the way we wanted to, but overall I think the group did a really good job of staying together and still trying to execute our gameplay amidst some of the rougher conditions. But all the credit to Boston, they were a really great team and made it really hard for us.”

Both teams prefer to dominate in possession and dictate the terms of the match, and Boston did a solid job of preventing the Wave from creating great chances in the final third, but they were also unable to make a single shot on target.

“Our back four is solid in the whole game, they were very well together with a unit together with Leah Freeman,” Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall said. “I don’t think Boston creates much at all against us, it’s just that the whole game, all in all, we wish to have created more and been able to bit better and often.”

The Wave out possessed the Legacy 54% to 46%, and were equal in total shots, but the Wave managed to find the back of the net first in the 63rd minute.

Boston was attempting to move the ball up the pitch from the goalkeeper, but Perle Morroni and Kimmi Ascanio were pressing the opposition intensely forcing a dispossession in the middle of the pitch. Ascanio took the ball for a quick counter and sent a through ball into the attacking third for Wave forward Ludmila.

The Brazilian attacker took one touch with her left foot to control the ball and cut inside before striking the ball with her right foot to put it past the goalkeeper on the far post making it 1-0.

The home side attempted to equalize, but the Wave were solid defensively and substituted on more attacking options to keep the Legacy on their back foot to hold onto the victory.

San Diego had 11 players called up for international duty and will take a pause in NWSL play for FIFA’s international window from April 7-18. The Wave will return to NWSL action on April 25 on the road against Denver Summit FC.
